Ulrich Schnauss played a $6 show at Hailey’s in Denton Saturday night. SIX DOLLARS! And there were perhaps only seventy five people there. I guess that it was the July 4th weekend, and while Ulrich might be only well known in a niche genre of music, but it was a very paltry showing. However, despite the small crowd his music still swelled and filled up the entire club as only his majestic songs can. Another added benefit of it being such a small show is that I was able to chat with him and even shake his hand and get a picture! I feel incredibly lucky to have caught him on this very small American tour of his.
I managed to sneak my way forward to the right side stairs next to his projector so I was basically five feet away from him the entire time. The crowd was very mellow and many had their eyes closed to soak in the music, but there was this one guy near me that looked like he was convulsing and he got on his knees and looked like he was praying to Ulrich. The pictures I attempted to take of him didn’t turn out very well unfortunately.
After the show, he pretty much sat down right were I was on the stairs and everyone was clapping and I got to shake his hand and tell him how amazing his music was. His German accent was fairly thick but I’m pretty sure he understood the word amazing.
Afterwords the folks I was with hung around the club for a bit to chat about great concerts we had been to (Sigur Rós, Massive Attack, bands of that ilk) and other things that pretentious hipsters talk about. Before I left, I did have a fanboy moment and asked to have a picture with him and he obliged. I asked him if he could pose with his Macbook Pro since I’m an employee of Apple and he said no problem, but he wanted to make sure he didn’t block my shirt because he liked Joy Division! I can now add Ulrich to the list of performers that I’ve talked to that complimented my shirt.
I would like to thank my friend Nick for taking the picture of Ulrich and I; the light in the corner is coming from the musical gods shining down symbolizing their approval. For those still not convinced of how awesome Ulrich is, enjoy this great remix he did of one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs.
